Hotel Review: KMVN TRH Chaukori, Uttarakhand

While we were planning for a budget trip to Chaukori, Uttarakhand, we didn’t want to spend a lot on luxury hotels and accommodation. Chaukori is a small, little town in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, and its beauty lies in its simplicity.

Hence, we wanted to book a hotel that would be budget-friendly, picturesque, and provide all the amenities needed for a family vacation.

There are many options for staying at Chaukori that are available on the internet, but we opted for the Kumaon Mangal Vikas Nigam (KMVN) Tourist Rest House. Ambience and Design

The Cottage Cottage Super Deluxe Room is equipped with all essential amenities to ensure a comfortable stay:

  • Spacious Interiors: A traditional Kumaoni-style architecture with sloping roofs and earthy tones. There are enough room for families or couples to relax comfortably. It includes a seating area and a bed area.
  • Queen-sized Bed: With clean linens and cozy blankets to keep you warm.
  • Heating Options: Room heaters (available on request) to combat the chilly evenings.
  • Attached Bathroom: Clean and functional, with hot water facilities that are much appreciated in the cold weather.

Pro Tip: During peak winters, request additional blankets and heaters as the nights can get quite cold.

The interiors are simple yet inviting, with wooden furniture and minimalistic decor that complements the natural setting. I’ll admit, there was no luxury here—no flat-screen TVs or plush upholstery—but honestly, that was part of the charm.

The Best Part: The Views

The view from the cottage was undoubtedly the highlight of my stay. I woke up to the sight of the sun rising behind the snow-capped peaks, casting a golden hue over the entire landscape. In the evenings, the same peaks turned fiery orange before fading into silhouettes under a sky full of stars. Being an independent unit, the seclusion of the cottage also ensures minimal noise, enhancing your connection with nature.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Privacy: The standalone design ensures peace and seclusion.
  • Unmatched Views: Ideal for photography enthusiasts and nature lovers.
  • Authentic Experience: Staying in a Kumaoni cottage enhances the charm of a hill station visit.

Cons

  • Limited Amenities: The cottage is basic, so don’t expect luxury amenities.
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi and mobile networks can be patchy (common in remote mountain areas)
  • Temperature Control: No in-built heating, which might be a challenge in extreme winters.

Food: A Taste of The Mountains

KMVN TRH Chaukori serves simple yet hearty meals that cater to both local and Indian palates. While the menu is limited, the food is prepared fresh. The hospitality of the kitchen staff adds to the charm of the stay.

Tip: Don’t miss their traditional Kumaoni Thali, which is a wholesome way to experience local flavours.

Other Facilities: Little Luxuries in the Hills

Although KMVN TRH Chaukori is a government-run facility, it offers a range of amenities to make your stay comfortable:

  • Room Service: Available on request for tea/snacks.
  • Power Backup: Ensures electricity during outages.
  • Wi-Fi: Limited connectivity.

Note: The serene environment compensates for the absence of luxury. It’s a place to reconnect with nature and yourself.

Why Support KMVN and Local Businesses?

Staying at KMVN TRH Chaukori isn’t just about enjoying a comfortable stay; it’s about supporting the local economy. KMVN properties are run by Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam, which promotes sustainable tourism while empowering local communities.
