Gulmarg has always been on my bucket list since childhood. I have grown up watching Bollywood movies where the actors and actresses sang and danced joyfully with the backdrop of the snow-clad mountains. My father, who went on a series of treks to Kashmir, narrated his memorable experiences in Gulmarg. So, when I got a chance to plan my winter vacation, Gulmarg topped the list.
Here is a detailed guide that you can refer to while planning your winter vacation trip to Gulmarg.
Nestled in the Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas, this enchanting destination hill station in Jammu and Kashmir sits at an altitude of 2,650 m (8,694 ft).
The Meaning of The Name
The name, Gulmarg, can be split into “Gul” which means “flowers” and “Marg” which means “meadows/alleys/roads”. Thus, the name literally translates into “meadow of flowers.” This name was awarded by Sultan Yousuf Shah Chak who frequently visted the place with his wife Habba Khatoon in the 16th century.
Gulmarg Connecivity
To reach Gulmarg, you have to reach Srinagar. Srinagar is well-connected by all means of transport.
- By Air: The nearest airport to Gulmarg is Srinagar Airport, which is about 56 km away. Taxis and jeeps are available outside the airport to reach Gulmarg.
- By Road: Gulmarg is well-connected by road to major cities in Jammu and Kashmir, such as Srinagar and Pahalgam. The drive from Srinagar to Gulmarg is about 60 km and takes almost 2–3 hours. From Srinagar to Tangmarg, it is mostly a straight drive on a flat road with very little ascent. the actual ascent starts after Tangmarg and you climb up a winding road till Gulmarg. The roads are smooth and in good condition for the entire stretch of the journey.
- The route is: Srinagar – Magam – Tangmarg – Gulmarg
- By Train: The nearest railway station to Gulmarg is Jammu Tawi Railway Station, which is about 290 km away. You can take a taxi or bus from the station to Gulmarg.
Gulmarg Connectivity in Winter
During winters, the connectivity to Gulmarg is a different story. During this season, Gulmarg gets buried under several feet of snow, and so the roads leading here become difficult to access.
During this winter season, a normal car can reach till Tangmarg. However, from Tangmarg to Gulmarg only 4×4 vehicles ply on this route, and that too with snow chains, as it becomes very slippery and extremely dangerous to drive on this route. You definitely need an experienced driver with a 4×4 vehicle with snow chains to reach Gulmarg.
A 4×4 cab with snow chains from Tangmarg will cost around Rs. 2000.

During winter, the landscape turns white with layers of snow. While you enjoy this exhilaring snowy experience, make sure you are well protected from the cold.
